(NECN) – Women going to prison has become a trending topic in pop culture in part because of a new TV show called “Orange Is The New Black”.

Former attorney Andrea James has had personal experience with life in a women’s prison, and she’s also the author of the book “Upper Bunkies Unite: And Other Thoughts on the Politics of Mass Incarceration”.

“Well I certainly think it is a different reality. Piper Kerman is a sister amongst those women who have been incarcerated and certainly she understands completely what that experience is like, and she wrote a book about it titled ‘Orange Is The New Black.’ The Netflix series, on the other hand, is a series that was written for television and for entertainment, so the value that it brings to issues that we are trying to refocus attention on is very different than what we’re talking about in ‘Upper Bunkies Unite,'” she says.

The Radio Boys (Kev Lawrence and C. Truth) went behind the walls with Andrea James of Families for Justice as Healing. Among the issues covered by Andrea were: why there should be a focus on women in prison and the impact on their children; Federal prison sentences vs. other prison sentences; The Fair Sentencing Clarification Act and; how tax dollars are wasted on prisons and where we should be putting resources.

Families for Justice as Healing focus primarily on the incarceration of mothers and the impact on children. Their mission is to raise awareness among everyday people of the need to end the war on drugs and prohibition through regulated reform.
